THE 10 WONDERS

10 - The City of Ljubljana

Ljubljana

The picturesque image of Ljubljana is characterized by a vivacious and lively history over five thousand years. Leaving an unmistakable mark on the city, above all, are the works of the world famous architect Jože Plečnik, as a result of which the city of Ljubljana is considered one of the best examples of urban planning of the 20th century. Plečnik's works include the building of the National and University Library, the redevelopment of the banks of the Ljubljanica River and in particular the construction of the Triple Bridge (Tromostovje) and the Shoemaker’s Bridge (Čevljarski most), the city’s central market, the Križanke summer theatre, the Bežigrad stadium, the monumental complex at the Žale cemetery and the church of St. Michael in Ljubljansko barje.

The most visited attraction in Ljubljana remains the Castle that has dominated the valley from the hill that rises above the city for about 900 years. The hill and the castle can be reached by a funicular or on foot. The castle can be explored on a typical guided tour but visitors are also invited to enter the “time machine” and relive six historical periods that have marked the history of the castle and the development of the city. “Waiting” for visitors in each of these stages is a character who presents their own era.
