THE 10 WONDERS

Strunjan

The favourable natural conditions of the Strunjan peninsula, in particular its maritime climate and sheltered position, have allowed the establishment and development of traditional economic activities, such as salt-making, fishing and agriculture. For centuries, Strunjan lived in close interdependence with neighbouring Piran and represented its natural economic hinterland. At the end of the 18th century, the town was known above all for its early fruit and vegetables, but later on for olive trees, persimmons and artichokes which began to be cultivated on its sunny terraces.

In addition to its typical cultural landscape, the area is now also characterized by an exceptional natural environment, protected since 1990 as a Natural Park. A rich undersea world, a natural coastline boasting a vertical cliff overhanging the sea more than 80 metres high, the only saltwater lagoon in Slovenia and the smallest and most northerly salt works still active on the Adriatic - these are the main features of the Strunjan Natural Park. Among the interesting activities for visitors, in addition to walking among the olive groves, tasting the local specialities, watching the fishermen at work and swimming in the clear sea, it’s also worth recalling the educational path entitled “Strunjan: portrayed from the sea” and the visitor centre at the Strunjan Salinas.
