THE 10 WONDERS

6 - The city walls of Piran

Piran

The city walls of Piran are mentioned as early as the 7th century, a period in which the so-called Punta was surrounded by the oldest part of the city. With the gradual expansion of the city, the walls that included new districts grew. Under the authority of the Venetians, Piran began to grow and develop rapidly. During the rule of the Republic of Venice, which lasted more than half a millennium, the last part of the walls was built with defence towers in the south-western part of the city as a protection against Turkish invasions. The best preserved part of the walls, on the slope of the Mogoron, is open to the public and thrills visitors with a view that embraces the entire historic centre of the city.
