THE 10 WONDERS

4 - Guarneriana Library

San Daniele del Friuli

In the heart of the small Medieval town centre at the foot of the hill, very well known for the quality of its hams, we find a very unusual library, the Guarneriana. Here, about 12,000 old books are preserved, including 600 particularly valuable ones, 84 incunabula and 600 dating back to the 16th century. The library is open to scholars from all over the world, as well as to people who want to visit it to discover the treasures that it holds.

The first nucleus of the library was created by Guarnerio dei Signori d'Artegna, a scholar and copyist of the 15th century, active first in Rome, and then in Friuli at the highest political and ecclesiastical levels. Founded in 1466, it was the first institution of public reading in the region and among the first in Italy. With the passage of time, other legacies have been added to the initial nucleus. The public library has remained almost intact over time and is considered one of the most significant and consistent documentary sources for Latin Humanism in Italy.
