26 - Regional Museum of Koper

Koper

The Regional Museum of Koper was founded in 1910 and since the end of the First World War has had its headquarters in the beautiful palazzo Belgramoni-Tacco, built in the Baroque style in the historic town centre of Koper. The museum houses aristocratic crests, paintings, weapons, Renaissance statues , ancient musical instruments, medals and uniforms of more recent periods while the main room of the museum on the first floor of the building, the outdoor lapidary and the garden in front offer pleasant environments for numerous concerts and other events that take place throughout the year.”

With a history spanning more than a hundred years, the Museum of Koper is the largest museum in Slovenian Istria and with its rich collections spans the periods from prehistory and the Roman era through to the splendour of Venetian times and more recent history. A special place is occupied by a musical collection representing the artistic life of the coastal cities of modern Slovenia from the Middle Ages to the end of the 20th century and the musical tradition of the 19th and 20th centuries in two broader areas, those of northern Istria, Čičarija and Brkini in Inner Istria and that of the Ilirska Bistrica area further east.
