The Museum of the Sea has its headquarters in the 19th-century Palazzo Gabrielli, built - like many other buildings in Piran at that time - in a neoclassical style. The building that stands on the seafront near the marina was once the residence of Pierfelice Gabrielli, a respectable citizen, elected mayor of Piran in 1848. The museum was founded in 1954 as a civic museum and has carried its present name since 1967, in honour of the Slovenian national hero Sergej Mašera, an officer of the Royal Yugoslav Navy.
The museum’s activity includes the study of Slovenian maritime history and the industrial sectors linked to the maritime sector, such as salt production, fishing and maritime trade. These are presented in the museum collections located both in the Palazzo Gabrielli and at the other offices located at the Salina Museum at the Sečovlje Salinas Natural Park at Fontanigge, in the Casa di Tona ethnographic collection in San Pietro, in the collection covering traditional shipbuilding and water sports development in the Monfort exhibition in Portorož, in the ship modeling collection at the Parenzana Museum in Isola and, finally, in the Giuseppe Tartini ‘memories room’ in his birthplace in Piran.
