24 - Ljubljana Academy of Music

Ljubljana

The Music Academy of the University of Ljubljana is the only university institute for higher musical education in Slovenia. Before today’s academy there existed Ljubljana’s Central Music Conservatory (1919-1926) and the State Conservatory (1926-1939). The Academy carries out its teaching, artistic and research activities through study paths that include thematic areas such as composition and theory, direction, singing, keyboard, bow, string and wind instruments, as well as brass instruments and percussion, together with chairs of Religious Music and Music Pedagogy. Every year, the best students put on over 150 public performances divided into three cycles. The first are concerts of the symphony orchestra, of wind and string chamber music together with chamber, mixed and Gregorian choirs, the second a series of chamber concerts and, finally, a set of soloist performances.

The research activity takes place above all in the Department of Composition and Music Theory, the Department of Music Pedagogy and within the framework of the annual International Symposium on Musicology. The Academy of Music collaborates closely with various Slovenian and international institutions. The high artistic and professional level of its activities is also confirmed internationally with the excellent performances of its students, groups or soloists, in Berlin, Vienna, Graz, Amsterdam, Salzburg, Trieste, Zagreb, Hamburg, Belgrade and in other important musical centres. The seat of the Academy is in the Stiški dvorec palace. This building, constructed in the style of the early Baroque, is located in a privileged position in the Stari trg square in the historic centre of Ljubljana.
