The Music School of Koper, with its sections in Piran and Izola, is one of the largest music schools in Slovenia and a member of the Association of Slovenian music schools. This important cultural institution recently celebrated the 70th anniversary of its foundation - it was founded, in fact, on 21st December 1948 and over its decades of activity has obtained enviable results in the field of education and musical training. Since 1971, numerous soloists, chamber music ensembles and orchestras have participated in national and international competitions and exhibitions.
The high quality of the teaching activity is attested by the annual successes of the students who, having completed their secondary education in the field of the so-called “artistic gymnasium” with specialisation in music and visual arts, active since the school year 1999/2000. They then can undergo entrance examinations for university studies and higher musical education in Slovenia or abroad. Since 1955, the Koper Music School has had its headquarters in the palazzo Gravisi-Barbabianca, one of the most prominent of the Koper palazzi, built in late Romantic style at the end of the 19th century. The structure has been adapted to meet the needs of the school, while maintaining all the most valuable elements, including the entrance, the ornamental staircase and the main hall.
