In 1896, the monument to Giuseppe Tartini, brought here from Venice on a vaporetto of the same name, was inaugurated in the main square, with great ceremonies,. The creation of the monument had been entrusted to the Venetian academic sculptor Antonio Dal Zotto, while the processing of the stones for the pedestal was entrusted to the stonemason Antonio Tamburlini from Trieste. The celebrations for the inauguration of the monument were a major event with more than 4660 visitors coming to Piran, mainly by sea for the occasion on vaporetti (water buses) and other ships.
The bronze structure of Tartini, greater than natural height (2.45 meters), dominates the square from a pedestal 4 metres high. Tartini is depicted in a passing moment that we can only imagine, with a violin in his left hand and a bow in his right - perhaps before or immediately after a concert, while he gives a slight bow to the audience or absentmindedly contemplating his birthplace which is just a few metres away.
