14 - Tartini House

Piran

The birthplace of the composer and violinist Giuseppe Tartini is an important cultural monument, located between a series of buildings on the north side of the then port (the mandracchio) and the current square that from the late Middle Ages has represented the central urban space of Piran. The building stands on the site of a Gothic house, built in the 14th century by a respected navigator family of Piran, the Pizagura.

When, at the end of the 17th century, Giovanni Antonio Tartini and Caterina Zangrando settled there after their wedding, the house, one of the oldest and overlooking Piran, was owned by the bride’s family,. Since then the house has been rebuilt and redeveloped several times. Most of the murals were created on commission by Giuseppe Tartini's nephew, Pietro Tartini, who inherited the composer's wealth after his death. At the beginning of the 19th century, Tartini's birthplace passed to new owners, the Vatta family, who honoured their famous relative with a commemorative plaque on the main façade of the house. In 1885, however, the town’s mayor Pietro Vatta had the square in front of the house - which at the time had no official name – named after Tartini.

In the house, now owned by the Comunità degli italiani Giuseppe Tartini, cultural events, exhibitions and other art workshops are held. In Tartini's room are some of the musician’s personal effects, depictions of him, manuscripts and works of a scientific nature. The interactive museum itinerary that leads one throughout almost all the spaces of the house offers the visitor a chance to live a virtual experience of Tartini's life and his work.
