Between the Basilica of Sant'Antonio and Prato della Valle we encounter a green oasis, the oldest University botanical garden in the world, founded in 1545. The garden was created to allow the University students to learn about the plants from which to obtain simple, natural medicines. This is why botanical gardens are called “i giardini dei semplici” – “the simple gardens”. Given their curative value, plants were often stolen during the night, until the large wall that still exists was built. Now, in this haven of tranquillity, we can find about 7000 specimens belonging to 3500 botanical species. The peace of the place offers great concentration for listening to music, and a suggestion comes to us from the thought that Tartini himself worked a few steps from this garden, and that perhaps he also went there to find serenity.
