4 - Hill of San Giusto

Trieste

The Colle (hill) of San Giusto is the historical heart of the city and its buildings are witnesses to the various phases of its history. First fortified in prehistoric times, it later became the heart of the Roman city. Remains from the Roman era are still visible in the square including the Forum and the Civil Basilica., while inside the bell tower one can see the Propylaea, the monumental entrance to the hill. The castle, located on the top of the hill, was built in various phases, starting from the end of the 15th century. In the 1930s it was restored in the manner we see it today.

Another key element of the Colle is the Basilica of San Giusto. An early Christian church from the 5th century originally stood on the site of which some traces of the floors remain, replaced by two parallel basilicas, one dedicated to Santa Maria Assunta and the other to San Giusto, built between the 9th and 11th centuries. At the beginning of the 14th century the two churches were linked together by joining them with a central nave, so that the church became five-nave.
