ALONG THE STEPS OF A LIFETIME

39 - Solemn Funeral Mass

Padua

Tartini's successor and his favourite pupil Giulio Meneghini who became the first violin of the orchestra of Basilica di Sant'Antonio - accompanied by the entire orchestra del Santo - paid tribute to the Master of the Nations by performing a Solemn Funeral Mass at the Church of the Servites. The concert was organized by Meneghini himself. Once the religious rite was concluded, a young abbot, Francesco Fanzago, gave a funeral oration celebrating the life and works of Giuseppe Tartini. Shortly after, this prayer was printed, enriched with notes and an engraving with the portrait of the Master of the Nations. It is as a result of Fanzago’s work that today we know many details of Tartini's life. Most probably the news describing the life of Tartini spoken during the funeral orations came from a manuscript. According to Pierluigi Petrobelli the manuscript was written immediately after the death of Tartini by Antonio Vandini who thus bestowed a last act of affection on his old friend and which allows us all a knowledge of the events of a life so rich. Further documents contribute to the overall reconstruction of the life of the musician which is still subject to studies and analyses.
