ALONG THE STEPS OF A LIFETIME

19 - The Giustiniani family

Venice

Tartini returned to the Veneto region where he began teaching violin to the offspring of the noble families of Venice. These included the Giustiniani. Tartini had Gerolamo Ascanio as a student, who, over time he became a high-level amateur to whom we owe the translation into Italian of the Psalms then set to music by Benedetto Marcello. A great bond of esteem must have been created between the musician and the Giustiniani family, so much so that thanks to a recommendation by Gerolamo, father of Gerolamo Ascanio, Tartini was hired in 1721 as “first violin and concert leader” in the orchestra of the Basilica of San Antonio, with conditions of absolute favour and without even having to submit to the test required of all new members.
