ALONG THE STEPS OF A LIFETIME

13 - Discovery of the 'Third sound'

Ancona

Ancona was the closest city to Assisi with an opera theatre where Tartini could sometimes go to earn some money playing the violin. The need to make small amount of money now and again perhaps came about after the death of Father Giovanni Torre da Pirano who, when he was alive had assured him his protection within the Convent of Assisi. It was during this period that Tartini discovered the existence of Differential sounds (or “Third Sound” as Tartini termed it), a vibration in a heavy or low register that is felt when performing a well-tuned bichord.
